Are There Any Alternatives To The IPad

The gadget world has been enjoying itself ever since Apple launched it's revolutionary Apple iPad tablet. The iPad is way cooler than a smartphone, and more portable than a traditional PC. It's become the most desirable gadget this year.

But the iPad does have some drawbacks; it does not support Flash, which means that when you surf any site that has a video embedded or advertising, or even a Flash-enabled front page, all you see is a blue cube where the Flash images would be. Apple did this because they believed Flash used up too much CPU. But it's irritating for the user.

Then there is the lack of a built in camera, still or webcam. This means you are unable to use your iPad for video conferencing, you still need your PC. The lack of a USB port is even more irritating for business users as they can't readily transfer documents back and forth from the iPad and their PC without using a special dongle (which costs more).

Apple's rivals are trying to take advantage of the iPad's disadvantages by offering tablets that can match the iPad's functionality plus offers the missing features. But have they succeeded?

The French company Archos issued the Archos 9, which does indeed allow you to multi-task, do video conferencing and transfer documents with a USB port. In addition it uses the Windows 7 operating system, which means regular software runs on it . Archos pratically invented the tablet PC, so the Archos 9 comes as a bit of a disappointment. Unfortunately, having more functions than the iPad has slowed the tablet down, especially the Flash. The Archos 9 uses the the Intel Atom 1.2GHZ processor, and until they upgrade to a faster processor, the Archos will run much slower than the iPad.

Hewlett Packard are working on the HP Slate, which they intend to have in the shops before December. Like the Archos 9, it will also use the Windows 7 OS, and will have a built in still camera and webcam, will be able to multi-task and be able to display Flash used on websites.

But will it run better than the Archos 9? Chances are it will, because they have decided to use the Intel Atom 1.6GHZ processor, which is much more powerful than the 1.2GHZ one that the Archos runs on. But we won't know for certain that it is an iPad killer till we actually get the chance to try it out.

Until it is released for sale, the iPad has the field to itself, and those who can't wait for December and the HP Slate will buy the iPad.
